Linda's Thoughts - Summer Slam Predictions Posted by Linda Robin
on 08/15/04 at 7:19 PM It’s so nice to be back. Even though we were on vacation, I saw Raw and Smackdown. Believe me there was no way I was going to miss either show. And now with Summer Slam just hours away, I’m refreshed and ready to give you my predictions for the last big pay per view of the summer. Last month I got three out of six right with my Vengeance predictions. You have no idea how I’m hoping to improve that score. However, I’m a little nervous because I’m finding the matches tonight to be anything but predictable. Before I start, thank you all for sending me your picks. I was very impressed that you could come up with your winners much faster than I could come up with mine. Okay brace yourself here I go.
Diva Dodge Ball – Just remember this is a filler match. And while I was not thrilled about seeing this set up last week on Raw, since then I have read that the match should be around 5 minutes long, and it will be taped so it can be edited. So I don’t think this match will hurt the show at all. I would expect the WWE diva’s to beat the wannabe divas. But even more importantly than that, it’s awfully weird to have Trish, Jazz, Molly, and Gail Kim teaming up with their enemies Victoria, Nidia and Stacey. See I would expect this match to go from the WWE diva’s forgetting all about the contestants to the heel diva’s taking on the face divas. I guess no matter what I need to pick the winners so I will go with WWE’s very best.
Winners: Trish, Stacey, Jazz, Gail, Molly, Victoria and Nidia
Six Man Tag Team Match - Rey Mysterio, Billy Kidman & Paul London vs. The Dudley Boys
Now if these six guys are given enough time and it’s not a quickie match, I think we could see a good match here. I really like Spike as a heel and what I like even more, is that last night on Velocity Spike was slapping Bubba Ray around. They have taken Spike’s new character and given him even more to work with. He might be little but he’s coming off as the dominating brother. I love it. Okay as I said I really think this could be a must see match, again as long as it’s not rushed. I want to go with Rey, Kidman and London, but I’m going with the heels, the Dudley’s. A win tonight against these three will just make things so much more interesting on Smackdown Thursday night.
Winner’s The Dudley’s
Till Death Do Us Part Match - Matt Hardy vs. Kane
Ah yes Lita marries the winner of tonight’s match. Now there are so many scenarios to this baby. Let me give you a few. Matt wins, yet because he is going to have reconstructive surgery on his knee and will be out 6-8 months, Kane the poor sport will beat the hell out of Matt which will be the reason for his absence. Or, Kane wins, and still takes Matt out, but ----- Shawn Michaels runs in before he causes severe injuries to Matt and this sets up Michaels and Kane for the next big feud. And finally Matt is about to win, but Lita turns on him and helps Kane win, and yeah Matt is viscously attacked and Lita and Kane admit that there was no baby they did it to cause Matt pain and anguish. Nice angles aren’t they? Do you think that makes it easier for me to pick a winner? Well it doesn’t, I’m totally lost with this one. I will go with Kane but I’m thinking that HBK will come back tonight and get their feud going.
As far as how this match will come off? That’s hard to say. With Matt hurting, I don’t know how long and how much he can give, but I’m sure this is going to still be entertaining.
Winner: Kane
WWE US Title – Match #1 In A Best of 5 Series - Booker T vs. John Cena
Right off let me say that Booker is winning. I have no doubt about it. Now with this being the best of 5 series, you want to believe that this is going to be one of the top matches of the night. I just wonder how much Booker has to go the distance. And trust me I’m not taking anything away from him. But with such an age difference, this match should be all Cena’s. However, Cena is not getting that title back, he had it long enough and it’s Book’s time to defend it. My only hope? That Kenzo Suzuki doesn’t come anywhere near the ring to interfere, I have to admit when he’s not on Smackdown I definitely don’t miss him.
Winner: Booker T
WWE Intercontinental Title – Triple Threat Match – Edge vs. Batista vs. Chris Jericho
This is going to be one hard worked match by all. I see Edge retaining the title. And while I can’t wait to see this match, I also can’t wait to see how the home town fans treat Edge. Will it be with huge pops, or even louder boos? I’m thinking Jericho is going to be the fan favorite tonight and I just want Batista to come off super strong and beat the crap out of both guys. Even though Batista won’t win he can still come off looking damn good in this one. This is going to be some match to watch.
Winner: Edge
Eddie Guerrero vs. Kurt Angle
Here’s where things really start getting complicated for me. This match and the next one I’m totally confused about who will win. Okay, Kurt hasn’t been in a pay per view since last March’s Wrestlemania and in that match against Eddie Guerrero he lost and lost in a humiliating way. Is this the night when Kurt not only makes a comeback in the ring? But will he also make a comeback in the win column by beating Latino Heat? Damn I wish I knew. I’m going with Kurt. And don’t think for one minute that with Eddie coming back from a very serious hamstring injury that he won’t be his usual outstanding self in the ring. This is going to be one hell of a match. We know Kurt looked very good against Charlie Haas over a week ago on Smackdown and I would expect him to look even better against Eddie tonight. I can’t wait to see these two go at it.
Winner: Kurt Angle
Eugene vs. Triple H
I don’t know heads or tails and the winner is? Okay truthfully I have no idea which way to go. I really don’t see Hunter winning. But I feel he should. As much as I like the character Eugene, I think they have over exposed him and he’s lost his humor and so much of his innocence which made Eugene so appealing. However, I don’t know if it’s necessary for Hunter to job to him to put him over. But if Hunter does lose I can see him losing because a very angry and injured William Regal will show up just in time to help Eugene defeat the game, and then Regal and Hunter will start something up, I could live with that. I am going with Eugene but hopefully Hunter will pull this one out, if not at least it better not be a clean victory for Eugene
Winner: Eugene
WWE Heavyweight Title – John Bradshaw Layfield vs. The Undertaker
I said this two weeks ago, I’m rather pissed off of how little Taker has been on to build this one up. And whether you love JBL or can’t stand him, he deserves to retain the title. When they decide to put Taker on weekly then I will be the first one to say give that man one more title run. But Summer Slam 2004 is not that time. This will be the very first time that I’ve seen JBL wrestle on a ppv, and when you think of it, this will be the very first time that JBL has wrestled someone that is at least a major opponent. That’s another thing that I’m really angry about other than JBL vs. Eddie for two pay per views, JBL has never defended his title with a credible opponent. No I don’t call Shannon Moore or the jobber from the “audience”, or even the El Luchador worthy opponents. The WWE title on Smackdown has gone down the tubes. While JBL has had some great non wrestling segments, his title defense in the ring has been worthless. Now I guess it’s almost certain that Paul Heyman is bringing in John Heindenreich. And I guess that means Taker will lose because of him. See this whole thing really aggravates me. You want to bring in Heindenreich then put him on Velocity not a major pay per view show. And don’t have him start a feud with a major star like Taker. And what role will Orlando Jordan play in this match? Again, Jordan involved is something I don’t need. As you can see this match is one I could definitely do without.
Winner: JBL
Chris Benoit vs. Randy Orton - Raw World Heavyweight Title
And I mentioned I could do without match above, well this is the match I can’t wait to see. I really believe Randy Orton is winning tonight, and if he does, I’m telling you he’s going to make being the World champion as important as he made the IC title. Chris Benoit has been one hell of a champ; I have seen the happiness on his face each time he makes his entrance. WWE has done a super job making Benoit mean something and if he should lose to Orton he’s losing to the one of WWE’s brightest new stars. And if I’m wrong and Benoit hangs on tonight, then I’m fine with that as well. I just look forward to seeing both of these men give their all and treat the fans to one spectacular match. I’m hoping this is definitely the main event, because Orton and Benoit deserve it.
Winner: Randy Orton
I’m psyched for this show like you wouldn’t believe. You know I really hope that Vince puts Rhyno and Tajiri vs. La Resistance on during Heat for the Tag Team Titles. I cannot believe that he would keep them off after that ridiculous two minute match on Raw last week. It’s bad enough that the Dodge Ball match is in there but add that match to Heat and I can live with the Dodge Ball crap. I plan on talking about Summer Slam on Tuesday along with my Raw thoughts and who knows if it’s really outstanding I might even have a column up tomorrow. For those that are going tonight ENJOY I wish I was going with you.
