Linda's Thoughts - The Soap Of The Night Posted by Linda Robin
on 08/24/04 at 7:52 PM Wasn’t Raw one interesting show last night? In the two hours and 10 minutes that it was on we were treated to just two matches. That’s right just two matches. We were also treated to a surprise visit by the Rock, we saw Randy Orton top Hunter’s water spitting and I believe the comedy world has a new King. But with all that said one segment took up way too much time and it stunk. And after I talk about Raw I will tell you about some interesting news items that hit last night.
I’m not happy about two matches on a two hour wrestling show. I really think Vince has a hell of a lot of nerve to do that to the fans. If I had been there live I don’t know how I would have felt about being there. By the way the Anaheim group was a very lively group and I want to give them props for seeing more of a soap opera than a wrestling show last night. Rock returned for a brief appearance. I had a feeling that since the show was in Anaheim he would be there. As funny as Rock was and believe me he had his moments he couldn’t make the 25 minute diva pie segment decent. Twenty five minutes of total waste. We could have at least watched two matches in that time period. I can’t believe how horrible and dragged out that segment was. I don’t even care to get into it. But I don’t blame Rock he did all he could, it’s too bad Vince and the creative team didn’t try a lot harder.
One of the matches last night was a rematch for the IC title with Chris Jericho taking on Edge. Now at first this match was okay but it was not going anywhere. However, after the commercial break, this baby picked up. I totally loved the second half. Jericho and Edge definitely came alive and everything at this point ROCKED, it was unfortunate that it ended with one of the worst endings I’ve seen in a long time, Edge getting dq’d for intentionally throwing Chris on the ropes and I guess injuring him. This was just DUMB. It’s not like we haven’t see every guy and girl in the WWE end up on the ropes like that. So a hot match with a very crappy ending.
And let me get to the last match the second match of the night, Ric Flair with Batista in his corner vs. William Regal accompanied by Eugene. This match didn’t really do it for me. It was okay nothing great but I did like the ending with both Flair and Regal using brass knuckles on each other at the same time. I was happy to see Regal get the win, I figure with Batista out there its Flairs for sure. This match also had Chris Benoit run out to save Eugene from a Batista beating. Did you all happen to notice that Eugene didn’t get major pops? I think the way they have over exposed Eugene was the reason for this. I was very glad that he was kept in the background last night. So there you have two matches and the rest just talk.
But some of the talk worked. Like Triple H coming out with Flair and Batista demanding that Randy Orton get down to that ring and lie down on the mat and let Hunter regain the title. Telling Orton to lay down so Hunter gets that title makes sense. Triple H has no concept of reality when it comes to that belt. Of course we all knew that wasn’t going to happen. As Randy walked very slowly to the ring, he came off looking so upset in fact like he had tears in his eyes. His face to face meeting with Hunter was great. Randy took his time giving up the belt to Hunter. Hunter was so sure about this entire match taking place that he called for a ref to come out to make the count. Watching Hunter smile that sick smile when Randy was about to give that belt to Hunter was great. Randy took his time parting with the belt. As Hunter tried to take it Orton wouldn’t let go. Naturally that pissed off Hunter. Orton looked like a beaten man but that look immediately changed, when Randy did his trademark spit right into Hunter face. This spit was more like a shower of love, okay seriously it was huge and Hunter reacted like you would expect he tried to attack Orton but Orton hit Hunter right with the belt and ran out of the ring and into the crowd. When Randy reached the top of the stairs he smiled and showed off his belt to Hunter who by then was shaking in anger. And yelling “Randy your dead.” This was a super segment because it built up the heat between Randy and Hunter, and you could also hear the chants of “Randy” coming from the crowd. He had their backing. The only problem I had was after the break a screaming and livid Hunter pushed Victoria out of the way while she was talking to Eric Bischoff and demanded a title shot with Orton. Eric was manhandled by Hunter and quickly agreed and made that match for next months Unforgiven. I just thought this was made way too soon. It was like lets hurry up make this match because we have so little time to get the rest of the show in. But other than that this Orton/Triple H meeting was one of the highlights of the show.
The other highlight was Kane and Lita’s wedding. And last night Kane became the King of Comedy. Sure we want Kane to be morbid and violent and disgusting but a little sick humor never hurt anyone or at least didn’t hurt Kane. As much as I could have done without the wedding, it was damn entertaining. This was an all white wedding. Kane’s bridal party consisted of a ring bearer and flower girl both little people. Two musicians dressed in white with white instruments playing morbid music, and Kane dressed in a white tuxedo plus Kane wore one heck of a smile almost throughout the ceremony. And Kane’s bride Lita came out in black. Hey can you blame her? Kane earlier had demanded that she wear the white gown he brought in but she changed her mind and black was the color for Lita. Kane’s smile disappeared when Lita came out in that black gown. But the smile returned because it was Kane’s wedding day. Kane was so damn good during the whole ceremony. He wanted to show Lita just how much he cared and had a video starring his happy bride with the song Having My Baby to go with it. This was a riot. With one verse of the song “I can see your glowing cause you’re having my baby” Lita is shown crying. This video showed all the misery that Lita has gown through with Kane. I’m telling you it was great. And Kane’s wedding vows to Lita was sick and yet appealing. Telling her in his sweet voice that she’s now his property and he can do whatever he wants to do with her and so on. And Lita? Well she came through too. Like Kane her facial expressions were something to see and her wedding vows I think topped Kane’s. Lita hoped that Kane would die a slow and painful death and that she loved Matt Hardy. Again we didn’t need this wedding, but at least the creative team came through as did all the players in this segment. Trish popped up in one sexy little outfit to be the maid of honor. She got one good joke in about Lita opening up her heart to Kane like she opened up her legs. Oh I liked that one but Lita didn’t and she attacked Trish and they got into it until Kane broke it up. Eric Bischoff came out all in white to read a passage from the bible. And finally Matt Hardy came to rescue Lita but he failed. Kane was ready for him. As Matt and Lita tried to leave a wall of fire popped up. And then Kane came after Matt and picked him up and threw him off the ramp onto a table. Say goodbye to Matt for a few months while he has his knees operated on. Kane then grabbed Lita and continued the ceremony. It’s official at least on TV Lita and Kane are married.
Yeah I felt very cheated by the lack of matches, and I hope this never happens again, but Rock’s appearance, the wedding and the Orton/Triple H segments definitely made this a fun Raw. But I do expect the ratings to nose dive due to the lack of wrestling on the show. Okay real fast last night Steve Austin and Sean Waltman were backstage at Raw. That’s all that was reported, but from what I have read Austin and Vince do keep in touch. Also John Heindenreich supposedly had a major temper tantrum last night at the house show. He screwed up something with Scotty and swore and screamed as he walked backstage and once backstage he threw things. Some in the back say he’s crazy and shouldn’t be in the businesses. You have to wonder what they are going to do with him now. Also Renee Dupree has been told to stop the dance it gets the fans behind him and that’s not what he wants. He has been fined for continuing to do that stupid little
French Tickler, and also he is not working hard in his matches and isn’t exactly a nice guy backstage. Now remember these are rumors but damn good ones. One last thing Chris Benoit is on Heat Sunday against Tyson Tomko. I will only say I’m okay with that as long as Benoit is back on Raw and in an important role next Monday. Okay so on to Impact and Smackdown. Now the question is will Heindenreich be pushed or is he done? I think you know my answer.
