Linda's Thoughts - Heyman/Cole, I Love It!

Another Friday and my Fox channel didn’t show Impact because of a baseball game. So again I’m just going to share my Smackdown thoughts with you. While I found the show for the most part to be a good one I liked last week’s show much better. Last night’s show had a few flaws that bugged me but there were also some pretty good matches. All in all as I said a good show, but there are things that could definitely be improved. Let me try to explain.

Okay the opening match was JBL vs. Charlie Haas. Now this was a good match. Both guys worked very well against each other. The main problem I have? Charlie Haas is a guy that I like so much. He’s super in the ring and he can work the mic. This man has so much potential. Yet within the last few months he’s either been tossed on Velocity, or thrown into matches like some jobber. For instance last week Charlie had a match with Orlando Jordan. And like the match against JBL it was a good one but it was like, what the hell is the purpose of throwing Haas into a ring with Jordan? And last night even though the match came off well, we never see any backstage confrontation with Hass, JBL and Jordan. We never get a reason to really cheer for Haas against these two. There’s nothing going on here. And this is so typical with the WWE. I wish they would just give Charlie something to say on a weekly basis to strengthen his character. Now after JBL took care of Haas again, JBL did his infamous mic work. I thought this went on a little too long, but JBL still came through. Unfortunately his counterpart Undertaker didn’t show up. But that just seems to be the norm. So we now know from Theodore Long that next month at No Mercy it’s Taker vs. JBL for the WWE title in a Last Ride Match. I’m not crazy about this gimmick match and again Taker is in the heart of things and isn’t there on a weekly basis.

Now the next match was Billy Kidman and Paul London vs. Renee Dupree and Kenzo Suzuki. Remember when I mentioned a few weeks ago that there was a rumor going around that Dupree was in Vince’s doghouse? He was supposedly fined for doing his French prance and for not working well in the ring. I say that rumor has to be garbage. Why? Because not only did Dupree and Suzuki become Smackdown’s new Tag Team winners, but Renee still does that damn French Tickler. So we have new winners? I have to say at first I wasn’t thrilled about his, but, if Paul London can get a singles push them I’m all for it. And Kenzo teamed up with someone is a very smart move. At this point performing solo isn’t the way to go with him. This match was done very well and Billy Kidman again stopped from doing the Shooting Star Press. Chavo’s injury hasn’t left him. The only bad part was the locker-room confrontation between Kidman and London after the match. Even without talking Kidman can’t act. London on the other hand came off pretty damn good questioning his friend’s sanity. Remember this is the second time that Kidman ditched his partner. It’s a good angle and I’m hoping that London will get enough on air time because of this.

Spike Dudley vs. Rey Mysterio was one of my favorites of the night. Talk about chemistry Spike and Rey definitely have it. Naturally D-Von and Bubba Rey interfered and here’s where things got pretty interesting. While all the Dudley’s were in the ring the first one to come out to help Rey was Bob Holly. Now why Holly I don’t know. But it worked for me. Maybe because after Holly showed up Rob Van Dam soon followed and all hell broke lose. All of this brought out Theodore Long who instantly declared a six man tag team match. This match was just as much fun as the previous one with Spike and Rey. And honestly having Holly in there kind of gave this a fresher feeling. Two good back to back matches.

Kurt Angle was in rare form last night backstage. Josh Matthews interviewed him and asked Kurt how he felt about having a rematch with Eddie after he won last week’s match even though it was a controversial win? Kurt’s comeback was priceless his reply was that the win was in the record book and then asked Josh where his record book was. Josh said he didn’t have it on him and Kurt very seriously asked “What kind of announcer doesn’t carry a record book? Angle’s expressions where great and he showed why he makes a super heel. And now I’m starting to think differently about John Cena. When they turned him face I was thrilled I was tired of the heel act. However last night had to be THE WORST rap Cena’s ever done. In fact it was so bad the fans kind of looked shell shocked. Listen I like the guy a lot but he’s definitely lost his edge. I really believed he could be a tough ass even as a face but the creative team has really dropped the ball where Cena is concerned. Also I think we have seen enough hype for Carlito Caribbean Cool. I say let’s end the ads and just bring put him on Smackdown and see what he has.

Now this next segment was a scream. Paul Heyman and Theodore Long are having this talk about the damage that Heindenreich has done to so many of the superstars. Heyman in that smart ass way that he has informs Long that he gave Heindenreich the night off. Long then tells Heyman that he has a match against a Smackdown announcer. Immediately Heyman goes berserk and refuses to wrestle Tazz. But that’s not who Long has in mind. Now the fun starts. Heyman gets all excited thinking it’s Michael Cole. The best line from Heyman? “You want to see the ratings go up because you want to see me slap the head off that metrosexual?” This was great; Heyman came of brilliantly during all of this. And while he’s trash talking Cole, Cole is all ready for Heyman making his comments about Heyman using the treadmill for a couple of years before he takes on Cole. So Heyman hit’s the ring and starts trash talking Michael Cole. This is so good Cole is trying to be tough but it’s not working. Then Funaki’s music hits and Funaki gets in the ring and starts beating up Heyman. Within seconds, the man that took the night off, Heindenreich appears and takes care of Funaki, yelling and screaming. Heyman then walks over to Cole slaps his face and Cole goes after Heyman but Heindenreich appears and Cole runs out of the arena. Now I liked this, while I’m not interested in Cole being in a storyline with Heyman it’s quite entertaining. So far Heidenreich is coming off as bad as bad can be. I think this is the only way that he can get over at all. I cannot see him in a match against a main guy like Taker then it’s going to stink. But the way he’s being used now is the only way to use him.

Cole managed to return for the Lumberjack match between Angle and Eddie Guerrero. The match couldn’t compare to last week’s. Eddie was extremely low keyed during this one. But make no mistake about it again the two of them put on a nice match. And again Luther Reigns did all he could to screw Eddie. The ending was really pretty cool. Things got going when the lumberjacks got into a big brawl. But as big as that brawl was nothing was as big as the return of the Big Show. Now during the show they showed an ad with Show and his return in two weeks. But surprise he came out last night, looking a little weird a little frightening and he took out every lumberjack and Guerrero and Angle. It didn’t matter if they were heels or faces they were destroyed by Show. This was a great way to welcome Show back. This was one ending I truly liked.

Sure I had plenty of complaints but the show still came through. Raw gets the edge this week and now it’s on to Unforgiven. I’ll have my predictions on Sunday and please keep emailing me yours. Very quickly the reports have it that Brock Lesnar has been released by the Minnesota Vikings and with Smackdown’s ratings really low this week what about a Lesnar return. I think everyone would benefit.
