Before a record Boston crowd of nearly 700...before a record crowd for a Friday night show show anywhere for Ring of Honor... and with record Boston merchandise sales...Ring of Honor came to the Greater Boston Indoor Sports Center in Revere, MA last night for the first night of the "Weekend of Thunder" featuring the American return of Juhsin "Thunder" Liger.

Here are the match results:

  • Jimmy Rave defeated Ace Steele via a Styles Clash for the pin.

  • Homicide won the four corner match over Angeldust, Fast Eddie, and Dunn (of Dunn and Marcos) after hitting the Cop Killer on Angeldust in what was reported to not be a particularly smooth match.

Post-match there was a fan (plant?) run-in after Homicide, claiming he was a New York Yankees fan, talked smack about the Red Sox. The fan/plant ran was beaten down by the Rotweilers and removed by security.

  • The Carnage Crew beat BJ Whitmer and Dan Maff: As expected, your basic hardcore style brawl....with four way juice. The finish was marred somewhat as Allison Danger had multiple mishaps trying to throw trashcans into the ring from the floor, with the trash cans twice hitting the top rope and bouncing back at her. The finish finally did come when the trashcans were finally gotten into the ring, and the Carnage Crew were finally able to smash Maff's head in for the pinfall.

  • Low Ki defeated Chad Collyer: Early in the match, Low Ki is reported to have done a great job of what I call the Chris Hamrick "injured leg spot", complete with the ref "throwing up the X sign", Gabe Sapolsky came out to check on Ki. As Hamrick always does so well...just as Ki was being helped out of the ring, he turned and clocked Collyer with a kick. Live observers felt they got even the smart ROH crowd to buy the injury.

The finish saw Low Ki to hit his huge top rope double stomp for the pinfall on Collyer.

  • John Walters and Nigel McGuinness defeated Samoa Joe and Jay Lethal, winning via arm submission on Lethal.

  • Post-intermission ,The Outkast Killaz defeated ROH wrestling school students Davey Andrews and Shane Hagadorn in a short match.

  • Austin Aries defeated CM Punk after Aries hit a 450 on Punk's leg, followed by (what else) a Boston Crab for the submission. The match was built around Aries working over the leg. Post-match, Aries got on the mic afterwards and demanded a shot at Samoa Joe.

  • The Havana Pitbulls successfully defended their ROH Tag Team titles against Roderick Strong and Jack Evans. The finish saw first a false finish with the referee appearing to make a three count on behalf of Evans (before announcing it was only a 2 count). Ricky Reyes then spiked Evans with a tombstone for the win.

  • In the match everyone really came to see, Jushin Liger defeated "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson by pinfall after a top rope brainbuster.

ROH and New Japan did the smart thing, and let Liger work his traditional gimmick, rather than his current heel character in NJPW. Dragon played heel (which he's quite good at, actually), since no fan in the building was going to treat Liger as a heel no matter what anyone booked....and actually got even the Revere audience to loudly boo American Dragon.

Liger got the monster pop everyone would expect.

Again, ROH and NJPW were smart enough to have a match where all Liger and Danielson's signature spots came into play with Dragon getting Liger in his Cattle Mutilation submission twice, with Liger escaping. In turn, Danielson kicked out of a pinfall after the Ligerbomb. Liger busted out topes and a frankensteiner as well...apparently hearing that the ROH crowd wants to see even legends wear their working boots.

Ring of Honor returns to Revere, MA on January 15th with Ricky Steamboat and Mick Foley both appearing, as well as Samoa Joe against Nigel McGuiness.
