WEEKEND OF THUNDER: Ring of Honor 11/6 Elizabeth, NJ results Posted by Bob Magee (Courtesy: PWBTS.com...with results of tonight's Victory Road PPV)
Ring of Honor completed its "Weekend of Thunder" before a crowd of 1100 at the Rex Plex in Elizabeth, NJ last night.
Last night's show was a night to remember for the obvious reasons...but also for the surprise guest, and the usual great effort from Ring of Honor.
Nigel McGuinness and Chad Collyer went to a 15 minute draw to open the show in a very solid opener.
In the "time to pay your dues" match, Carnage Crew over ROH students Davey Andrews and Franco
In a wild four-man scramble, Izzy defeated Trent Acid, Fast Eddie, and Jack Evans as Izzy hit what you could describe as a top rope sit out Asai DDT onto Acid for the win. Jack Evans brought out his usual highspot craziness.
Jimmy Rave over Jay Lethal with the "Rave clash", and the usual interference from Nana. Rave's use of the Styles Clash got LOUD boos.
Gary Michael Cappetta came out and read a "letter from Jim Cornette", which...in short...stated that he had one major challenge remaining in wrestling...to stand on the other side of the ring from....Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. This match-up was supposed to take place this spring, but was cancelled after the Rob Feinstein incident back in March.
At least at of last night...the two legends will do a "managerial debate" as opposed to working a match (subject to change as always, I'm sure, based on angles developing during the show).
CM Punk and Ace Steele over Generation Next after CM Punk hitting the Pepsi Plunge on Strong into a ladder propped up between the second rope. The match was full of "can you top this" spots onto a ladder and table spots that made me think I was at a CZW show.
After the match, and as the show approached intermission, CM Punk came out to again challenged Samoa Joe and said he wanted a no time limit match for the belt, after his two 60 minute time limit matches with Joe. Punk said he wouldn't left the ring until Joe came out. Punk then proceeded to bring out a chair...and sat in it throughout the intermission, even getting water and a magazine from a ROH staffer.
Well...Samoa Joe didn't come out, but... an unannounced Mick Foley did... instead to an incredible reaction. Foley shilled his new book "Tales from Wrescal Lane". Foley made references to WWE...which got surprisingly loud "F#$@ HHH" chants.
Note to Vince McMahon...when a crowd as hardcore for wrestling as this crowd is reacts in this way....not in just the obligatory WWF/E boo...but this loud...this close to New York City...you have a problem.
As HHH...er...WWE... was getting booed, Foley was smart enough to say "At least it isn't TNA", which got a huge pop and a LOUD "F%$# TNA" chant.
Note to Jeff Jarrett...when a crowd as hardcore for wrestling as this reacts in this way....a crowd who ought to be the first people to buy your Victory Road PPV tonight...you REALLY have a problem.
Punk practiced Foley's trademark cheap pop...got another dig in at TNA... and then, when Samoa Joe didn't come out... Mick said Joe might be "softcore like Steamboat" before intermission.
Dunn and Marcos pinned Angeldust and Dixie
As the match started, CM Punk was still in the ring. It appeared that the match was somehow going to have to work around Punk, when Samoa Joe came out and finally accepted Punk's challenge. Special K teased breaking up again for the 3,458th time.
John Walters beat Homicide by DQ in what was a solid match which required an improvised finish as Homicide took a bad fall, landing on the back of his head after the second rope break via the boston crab. The mishap occurred as Walters and Homicide were going for a superplex, but one or both slipped, as seemed to do a front flip on the RexPlex floor. They tried to continue, but eventually went to the improvised finish as Julius Smokes ran in the ring and clocked Walters for the needed DQ.
Post-match, The Rottweilers jumped Walters, with Smokes...out of nowhere... giving Walters a hellacious piledriver.
Havana Pitbulls successfully defended their Ring of Honor Tag Team Titles, as they defeated the team of Dan Maff and BJ Whitmer when the Rottweilers switched and got the small package. One hilarious moment saw Maff teasing the People's Elbow, but doing a Dick Togo-style cannonball instead.
Then...the moment everyone was waiting for.
Even though the hour was approching midnight...the crowd went absolutely nuts for Liger's entrance.
When the first notes of Liger's ring music hit...the building ROARED....and I do mean ROARED. I have no problem telling you that yours truly and everyone else in the building marked out like 8 year old kids. Streamers flew from every possible direction...and Liger actually looked amazed at the crowd reaction.
When things eventually got started, Jushin Liger and Samoa Joe over "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson and Low Ki after a Liger bomb on Danielson. Crowd was hot for everything Liger did, with his standard spots...including the palm strikes.
After the match, Low Ki and the Rottweilers turned on American Dragon, with Samoa Joe and Jushin Liger making the save. All three stood hands raised as the evening ended.
NOTES: Many fans (and workers) have discovered the IKEA cafeteria across the Elizabeth Center parking lot (the all-encompassing name for IKEA, the RexPlex and a Kids 'R Us store) as a better and cheaper alternative to what's laughingly called food in the RexPlex. If any of those fans happened to go over to the IKEA cafeteria about 90 minutes before the doors opened...they would have seen an out of gimmick Jushin Liger in line getting his dinner, along with two NJPW staffers.
ROH announced the largest pre-sale in company history for the December 4th Rexplex return with Samoa Joe-CM Punk III, Jim Cornette and Bobby Heenan in their "managerial debate" that finally happened (after being postponed from this spring as the result of the Rob Feinstein incident).
While no figures have yet been announced by ROH regarding this...I'd be surprised if this show didn't set a merchandise record for the company as the company now takes credit cards...and with the Christmas season soon starting, people were grabbing anything that wasn't nailed down. Click
