Ring of Honor Do Or Die IV afternoon results
Ring of Honor returned to Elizabeth, NJ for the afternoon "Do or Die IV" show featuring up and coming talent. The show drew a surprising 500 fans, the most ROH has drawn for an afternoon card with the exception of the December 2003 afternoon show preceding the Final Battle show with All Japan talent.
Both the afternoon and evening crowds were helped by a prominent article on Friday in the Newark Star-Ledger.
Lacey defeated Alison Danger
Christopher Street Connection over Full Impact Pro's Heartbreak Express
The debuting Vordell Walker defeated Cheech of Special K.
Two of CM Punk's students defeated Jerk Jackson and another guy
In a student match, Ricky Landell and Alex Law (with Steve Corino) defeated Davey Andrews and Anthony Franco
(with CM Punk)
Fast Eddie Vegas (with Dave Prazak, doing their gimmick from Full Impact Pro) defeated El Generico (who was over from the get-go, and got over quickly with those who hadn't seen him on a CZW or JAPW show; Josh Daniels and Arik Cannon
B-Boy defeated Kevin Steen in what was easily the match of the afternoon
Homicide (with Rocky Romero) defeated Antonio Banks to retain the Full Impact Pro title. This was a rather forgettable match, largely because of Banks. One problem with bringing in FIP talent to the Northeast, is that many aren't familiar with the storylines. Banks tried to do a promo at the beginning which just fell flat to the live crowd.
Ring of Honor "Third Anniversary Weekend: Part 1" 2/19 evening results
Ring of Honor returned to Elizabeth, NJ for Third Anniversary Weekend: Part 1 in front of a crowd of nearly 1000, up noticably from the December 4th show.
The show opened with the locker room coming out to the ring. CM Punk gave a speech to the live crowd thanking the fans for all of their support, especially over the "highest of highs and the lowest of lows" of the past year.
Steve Corino defeated Roderick Strong in as good an opener as you'd expect from these two. Corino worked the match with a heavily taped broken hand, which had been injured only a few days ago. Corino offered Strong a handshake after the match, but Strong heeled him off; which hopefully means that this isn't the end of this program.
Jay Lethal defeated Jimmy Rave (with Prince Nana) to earn a match for the Pure title later in the evening in a really good match. Prince Nana came out and said that since Walters was Champion, he could dtermine when his match was...and like a good heel would, he chose to have the match...right now, just after Lethal's "hard fought match"
John Walters defeated Jay Lethal to retain the ROH Pure title.
In a great mix of lucha and comedy from Osaka Pro, Billy Ken Kid defeated Ebessan. Ebbessan for those who don't know, is a clown who does imitations of other well known wrestlers. It wouldn't be the last time we'd see himn.
Alex Shelley defeated Jimmy Jacobs in another really good match. As Shelley offered Jacobs his hand, Jacobs heeled on Shelley and beat him down.
Spanky defeated CM Punk in yet another really good match. Spanky was over pretty big with the crowd, but the fans as they have been the last few show have been getting on Punk's case. Prince Nana came out afterwards and offered Spanky a spot in the Embassy, which Spanky turned down. Nana then got in Punk's face and Punk layed him and the Outcast Killers out.
Dan Maff and BJ Whitmer defeated Ricky Reyes and Rocky Romero (with Julius Smokes) to win the ROH tag titles. Good match with a surprising result and a great reaction for the title change.
In some of the major news of the night, Gary Michael Cappetta announced that at the April 2 return to the Replex, Ring of Honor, in cooperation with Inoki and the NWA, that Ring of Honor would hold an eight man juniors tournament, with the winner of the tournament to receive a slot in New Japan's 2005 Best of the Super Juniors tournament.
Then came time for Mick Foley's mystery wrestler to take on Samoa Joe....or so we thought.
Foley did a REALLY long promo that might have been crapped on if it were anyone by Mick Foley, speach saying he was not going to be doing a match at Wrestlemania with Ric Flair, and that he had the artist formerly known in WWE as Test as Joe's opponent, but it didn't materialize.
First Foley brought out Vordell Walker to face Joe. Joe took out Walker in a short squash.
Then, Foley then said he had a backup plan "just in case". He brought out the man who Foley dubbed as the "New Cactus Jack". Out came Ebessan, dressed up completely as "Ebbe-Jack" complete with red flannel, a wig, and fake beard. Although some of the crowd was initially disappointed at not getting what appeared to be a legitimate match, they got into things. Samoa Joe and Ebessan then had a short, decent match with Joe going over; followed by him jumping Foley post-match with a stiff lariat and a chair shot.
Homicide defeated "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson in a taped fist match, after Julius Smokes taped brass knuckles to Homicide's fist. The two brawled around the building, and I mean ALL around the building. This match is part of a "best of 5" series with various stipulations between the two, with Homicide holding a 2-0 lead.
In a double juice steel cage match that was surprisingly excellent, Austin Aries defeated Colt Cabana to retain the ROH World title. The fans were really into the match, with the typical alternating chants for both wrestlers going on the majority of the match.
In a GREAT finish, as Colt Cabana was in the process of climbing over the cage to win the title, but Aries dove out the door (and I do mean literally dove through the door and the ropes to the floor) legitimately a half second before Cabana came down from the top of the cage to win.
In what seemed like an improvised finish, Dunn and Marcos won the Scramble Cage match, defeating the Carnage Crew (and Izzy/Deranged, Azreal/Dixie, and Jack Evans/Roderick Strong) after Marcos did a senton off Dunn's shoulders from the top of the cage to put Loc through a table to win. The match featured the usual insane high spots as Evans did a 630 off the top of the cage to the inside and Izzy did a corkscrew tumbleweed to the floor.
I suggest that the finish may have been improvised because Strong was carried out after appearing to injure his ankle or knee. It was hard to tell when this happened with no obvious high spot or impact having occurred, but Strong rolled out of the cage and was carried out putting no weight on his leg. Click
