Ring of Honor 3/5 Philadelphia, PA results

Posted by Bob Magee

In what would prove to be a very challenging night/and next several days for Ring of Honor (see other article on at this link); Ring of Honor returned to Philadelphia for its Trios Tournament before a decent crowd, but one held down somewhat from top drawing shows in the area due to a major concert last night.

That would be the least of ROH's concerns before the night's end, one of which the promotion got through somehow, and one that may be more problematic.

First round Tournament matches

  • Generation Next (Austin Aries, Jack Evans, and Roderick Strong) defeated Davey Andrews, Shane Hagadorn, and Anthony Franco from the ROH Wrestling School in a total and complete 2 minute beatdown

  • CM Punk, Colt Cabana, and Steve Corino defeated The Embassy (Jimmy Rave, Oman Tortuga and Weapon of Mask Destruction #3 as Punk submitted Weapon of Mask Destruction #3 with an anaconda-vise link submission.

  • The Rottweilers (Homicide, Ricky Reyes, and Rocky Romero) defeated Ring Crew Express and El Generico, as Homicide nailed El Generico with a lariat

  • In the match of the night, Samoa Joe, "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson, and Vordell Walker defeated James Gibson, Spanky and Nigel McGuinness in an excellent 25 minute match

After the last match, Trent Acid came out to the ring and cut a promo yapping about how all these people (in the preious match) were from outside Philadelphia, and that the fans shouldn't be cheering them, but cheering him...and that he's so good he can quit . The Rockin' Rebel came out and attacked him, and was joined by all six workers in the last match in giving Acid a beatdown.

Gary Michael Capetta announced four of the participants in the tournament to determine who gets a spot in New Japan's "Best of the Super Juniors", scheduled for April 2 in Elizabeth, NJ. Announced were Matt Sydal, Bryan Danielson, James Gibson, and "The New Black Tiger". As the night and the next day would prove, ROH will need a venue for this show.

Allison Danger cut an intentionally delusional promo about Christopher Daniels and the Prophecy.

  • Generation Next (Austin Aries, Jack Evans, and Roderick Strong) defeated CM Punk, Colt Cabana, and Steve Corino, as Jack Evans moonsaulted off of Strong's back onto Punk for the win in 15 minutes.

A weld in one corner broke on the ring support adjacent to one corner post broke during the match, leaving the ropes with little tension. These six, who already sounded like an NFL injured reserve list (Evans with recent concussion/neck injury, Austin Aries with injured knee, Roderick Strong with an injured ankle, and Steve Corino working with a hand borken in three places). These six worked an incredible match given what they had to work with, leaving nothing apparent out of their match.

CM Punk and Corino argued after the match and Corino refused to shake Punk's hand.

A long intermission ensued as the ring crew did an incredible job of getting the ring usable for the rest of the evening (althougn permanent repairs will need to be made on that portion of the ring). The ring was made usable and the ropes tightened...although most everyone tried to keep away from that one corner just in case.

In the post-intermission match, Rockin Rebel and Greg Matthews defeated

  • The Rottweilers (Homicide, Ricky Reyes, and Rocky Romero) defeated Samoa Joe, "American Dragon" Bryan Danielson, and Vordell Walker

  • Azriel won the "Six Man Mayham match" by pinning B-Boy. Izzy, Kevin Steen, B-Boy, Deranged and Dixie were also involved in the match

  • Jay Lethal defeated John Walters to win the ROH Pure Championship

The crowd was all over Walters as could be expected, after his two minute squash to Chris Masters on last week's Monday Night RAW. The crowd greeted Walters with "Masterpiece" chants and other chants not repeatable here. Walters looked pissed and said back to one heckler "When was the last time you made $250 for 5 minutes of easy work?". That didn't help and the heckling from ring-side went on for the remainder of the match, including chants of "full nelson" every time (referring to the way Walters had been defeated on RAW) Lethal teased his trademark dragon suplex.

  • The Rottweilers (Homicide, Ricky Reyes, and Rocky Romero) defeated Generation Next (Austin Aries, Jack Evans, and Roderick Strong) to win the Trios Tournament, with a great match that saw reverse after reverse turn into Homicide pinning Austin Aries with a kudo driver/copkiller.

Ring of Honor debuts in Woodbridge, CT on March 12.

Ring of Honor was scheduled to return to the RexPlex for a American "Best of the Super Juniors" tournament on April 2...but was greeted with the news shortly after the Philadelphia show concluded that the rexPlex had ceased operations with no notice whatever to Ring of Honor or any of the people that use the vast recreational facility's services, including area high school basketball teams, one religious congregation and a number of other youth and recreational leagues and programs.

The promotion announced it was not returning to Philadelphia until July, however, with the news of the RexPlex's closure, this may well change things considerably, as ROH will need to find a new venue for its April 2 show...very quickly.
