WWE Royal Rumble Results - January 21, 2001

The show got started very quickly. There was a quick introduction from the broadcast


Match #1: Tag Team Title Match
Edge & Christian vs. The Dudley Boyz
The Dudleyz came out first and clips were shown of Edge and Christian taking out the Boyz on Smackdown. Edge and Christian were attacked early and they had to regroup on the outside. The Dudleyz attacked them in the aisle and the match started. D-Von and Edge started in the ring. D-Von hit a big elbow and went for the cover early. Christian and Buh Buh were tagged in and The Dudleyz hit a double shoulder block on Christian and then Buh Buh went for the cover. Buh Buh then backed Christian into the corner and then hit a sidewalk slam and attempted to pin him again. D-Von was tagged in and Christian hit a low blow and then tagged back in his brother Edge. Edge came in and had the upperhand on D-Von. He took him down and kicked him in the head repeatedly and then powerslammed him down. Edge was tagged in and he his a Side Russion Leg Sweep and then bashed D-Von’s head into the mat.

Buh Buh tried to get in the ring and the ref was distracted. This allowed Edge to get some cheap shots in on D-Von. Edge was tagged in and he hit a neckbreaker and then went for the pin. Buh Buh made the save, but D-Von could not capitalize. Edge continued to put a beating on D-Von and Christian was tagged in. He choked D-Von and then tagged Edge back in. Edge tried to powerbomb D-Von and couldn’t. D-Von broke free and catapulted Edge into the ringpost, which knocked Christian down to the mat. D-Von finally made a tag, but the ref missed it. Edge and Christian then went for chairs and tried to both hit D-Von at the same time, but missed.

Buh Buh finally was tagged in and he took both Edge and Christian down. Buh Buh laid out Edge and called for the “Whazzup” Dive off the top. D-Von hit the move and then Buh Buh called for the table. D-Von went for the table under the ring, but was stopped by Christian. In the ring, Edge tried to hit Buh Buh with the title belt, but was rolled up and nearly lost the match. The Dudleyz went for the 3D, but Edge hit a spear on Buh Buh and almost got a 3-count.

Edge then climbed the ropes and went for a Dive off the top. D-Von knocked him off the ropes and Christian was left alone in the ring with both Dudley Boyz. They called for the 3D and then hit the move on Christian. He stayed down for the 3-count and the Dudleyz are the new WWF Tag Team Champions.
Winner(s): The Dudley Boyz

Following the match, Jim Ross announced that Drew Carey was at the show. He was then shown in the parking lot getting out of his car and entering the arena.

An interview was shown from earlier in the evening with Vince McMahon. Vince said that Steve Austin would participate in the Royal Rumble match. He then said that it would only be fair to keep Triple H in the Main Event, since he did not really attack Austin on Smackdown.

Triple H and Stephanie were shown in their dressing room. Triple H told Stephanie that he did not want trouble with her and Trish during the title match. Stephanie said she would keep Trish out of the match, and then Drew Carey came into the room. Triple H introduced him to Stephanie and he said he had just seen Kamala. Drew said he was loooking for Vince and it had something to do with his Superbowl PPV special. Stephanie then said she had heard that Drew was a ladies’ man. She then took him to Trish’s dressing room and told Triple H to get ready for his match.

The APA were then shown playing poker. They were having a good time and then Crash Holly came in and interrupted. He said that even though they are friends, he would have to eliminate them in the Royal Rumble match if they got in his way. He left and they laughed at him.


Match #2: Intercontinental Ladder Match
Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho
Chris Jericho came down to the ring first. Benoit walked slowly to the ring and they went right at it once he stepped into the ring. Jericho got the early advantage and backed Benoit into the corner. He hit several chops and then kicked Benoit to his feet. Jericho got Benoit in a hold, he broke out and slammed Jericho, shoulder-first, into the ringpost. He then went to work on Jericho in the corner and then hit a shoulder breaker. Benoit kicked up Jericho and attempted a scoop slam, but Jericho broke free and hit a flying shoulder block. Jericho then used the ropes as a springboard, but Benoit countered his move and Jericho fell out of the ring and onto the floor. They then fought out by the ladder, and Benoit sent Jericho into the ringpost once again. He then brought the ladder into the ring.

Jericho slid through the ropes, and Benoit caught him and slammed him into the ring steps. Benoit went for the belt, but Jericho came in and pulled him off of the ladder. Jericho then backed Benoit into the corner. He grabbed the ladder and rammed it into Benoit’s head. Jericho then threw Benoit into the corner and then slammed the ladder into Benoit’s gut.

Jericho laid the ladder across the top turnbuckle and then tried to whip Benoit into it. Benoit countered the Irish whip and Jericho was sent into the ladder. He fell to the outside and Benoit went for a suicide dive through the ropes, and Jericho was waiting with a chair that connected with Benoit’s head in mid-air. On the outside, Jericho slammed Benoit onto the security wall. He set up the ladder and tried to let it fall on Benoit, but he moved and Jericho hit the guardrail.

Benoit got up and grabbed the ladder. He slammed it into the face of Jericho and they then went back into the ring. Benoit hit a big clothesline and then pulled the ladder back into the ring. He set it up in the corner and then went to work on Jerihco. Benoit lifted Jericho on his shoulder and ran him head-first into the ladder. Benoit tried to do it again, and Jericho escaped and slammed Benoit into the ladder. Jericho then set up the ladder in the same corner. Jericho got Benoit stuck in the ladder and then pushed it down so that it fell on top of him.

Jericho picked up the ladder and Benoit stood up and dropkicked it into his face. Benoit put the ladder back on top of the turnbuckle and tried to whip Jericho into it, but the move was reversed and the ladder knocked out Benoit. Jericho stood on the ring apron and smashed Benoit with the ladder when he stood up. Benoit was out and Jericho went for the IC title. Benoit caught him and pummeled away at him while he was climbing and he suplexed Jericho back over the top rope.

Benoit went for the title. Jericho got back in the ring and tried to stop him. Benoit kicked him away and Jericho went back up to the top of the ladder. He grabbed Benoit at the top and somehow applied a reverse Boston Crab on the top of the ladder. He let him got and went for the title, but Benoit kicked the ladder and made it fall before Jericho could grab the title. Benoit was holding his back, and Jericho ran the ladder into him when he stood up. Jericho started to climb again, but saw Benoit coming and tried to jump down on him. Benoit moved and applied the Crippler Crossface. Jericho started to tap out, but the ref would not stop the match.

Benoit finally let go and then slammed Jericho into the ringpost once again. Jericho was able to escape and slam Benoit into the ladder. Jericho backed Benoit into the corner and put the ladder in front of him. Each man climbed one side of the ladder and they locked up at the top. Jericho went for a suplex, but Benoit pushed him off the ladder. Benoit stood on the ladder and tried to his a flying headbutt, but missed and hit the mat hard. Jericho climbed the ladder again, but Benoit pushed it over and Jericho fell to the outside.

Benoit propped the ladder up and at the same time, Jericho grabbed a chair on the outside. He came into the ring and smashed the chair across the back and then threw him out of the ring. Jericho set up the ladder and started to climb for the title. Benoit could not get up, and Jericho reached up and got the title and fell to the floor.
Winner: Chris Jericho

Drew Carey and Trish Stratus were shown talking in the back. Drew was bragging out his two shows and Trish said she was involved with someone. He asked her if she wanted to move up the ladder to him since he had two shows and was successful. Vince then came in and shook hands with Carey. Carey asked Vince how to promote his special this Saturday, and Vince suggested that he be a part of the Royal Rumble match. Vince said he would be a big hit and he accepted.

Billy Gunn and Chyna were shown talking in the back. Billy did not want her to wrestle and she said she felt fine. She told him not worry about her.

Chris Jericho was interview by Michael Cole. Jericho said he was happy to win the belt and he told Benoit that he proved him wrong by taking his title.


Match #3: Women’s Title Match
Ivory vs. Chyna
Chyna came right in and clotheslined Ivory. She picked up by the hair and swung her around and then slammed her hard into the corner. Chyna then hit a snap mare takedown on Ivory from the top rope. Ivory was defenseless at this point, and Chyna kicked her repeatedly in the corner, and then knocked her over the top rope. Ivory tried to escape through the crowd and Chyna caught up to her and continued the beating.

Chyna military pressed Ivory and slammed onto the mat around the ring. Chyna picked her up and tossed her back into the ring. Chyna picked Ivory up onto her shoulder and powerslammed her down. Steven Richards then came into the ring and Chyna took care of him quickly and tossed him out of the ring. Chyna went for a handspring on Ivory in the corner, and fell down hard once she hit it.

Chyna was motionless on the mat, and was holding the back of her head. Ivory reached over and made the cover and got the victory. Chyna was not moving at all and Lawler left the announce table to check on her. Billy Gunn and WWF officials came down to check on her. She had a frightened look on her face the entire time. The officials then put her in a neck brace and carried her out on the stretcher. As they wheeled her out, Lawler rejoined the Ross at the announce table and said that he tried to get her to say something, but she did not say anything. Lawler said she could not move her fingers when he was in the ring.
Winner: Ivory

Stephanie was in the backstage area. She went to the makeup/hair lady in the back asking for help with a bobby pin in her hair. Trish was already with the lady. She got up and said Stephanie needed more help than her and said she had her own affairs to attend to.

Drew Carey was given wrestling attire for his match. Kane then walked by and Drew tried to talk to him. Kane did not say a word to him.

Low Down were shown in the back arguing with Tiger Ali Singh over which one would get to be in the Rumble Match. Vince interrupted and said that neither of them would be in it. He said they the spot was taken by Drew Carey. Tiger did not know who Carey was and asked Vince who it was. Vince just walked out of the dressing room.

Triple H was then shown in the back getting pumped for his match. He was quite intense.


Match #4: WWF Title Match
Kurt Angle (with Trish Stratus) vs. Triple H (with Stephanie
Triple H and Stephanie came down to the ring first. Kurt and Trish came down the aisle next and Stephanie gave her the evil eye, so the speak, the entire time. Angle and Triple H locked up and the match was underway. Triple H got the early advantage with an armlock, but Angle broke free and then was backed into the corner. Triple H got Angle in a headlock and then hit a shoulder block on him. Angle then hip tossed Triple H and knocked him out of the ring. Triple H paced around for a while and finally got back in the ring.
Triple H backed Angle into the corner and then was whipped out into the opposite corner. Angle his a backdrop on him and then locked in an armbar. Triple H kicked Angle in the gut, but he countered and hit a suplex on Triple H. Angle then hit two more and went for a pin. Triple H grabbed his back and rolled out into the aisle once again.

Angle went to work on Triple H in the aisle, and then was slammed, back first, into the guardrail. Triple H tolled into the ring to stop the count and then went back to work on Angle. He slammed his head into the ring steps and then they got back into the ring. Angle hit a few rights on Triple H and then hit the ropes, but was caught in a drop toehold. Triple H then hit a legwhip on Angle. Angle was holding his knee and Triple H picked him up. Angle his a desperation inzuguri on him, but he could not follow-up, and Triple H backed him into the corner again. Angle then whipped Triple H into the corner and he flew over the ropes.

Angle met up with Triple H on the outside and slammed him into the ring steps. Angle then slammed Triple H’s head into the ring apron and rolled him back into the ring. Triple H took down Angle in the ring and slammed his knee into the ringpost. Stephanie then distracted the ref and Triple H nailed Angle’s knee with a chair.

Angle rolled to the outside and was having trouble getting up. Triple H grabbed him and slammed his knee into the ring steps. He rolled Angle back into the ring and chop blocked his knee when he stood up. Triple H hit another one as soon as Angle got up and then he went to work on the left knee even more. Triple H lifted Angle’s left onto the bottom rope and then hit an elbow drop on the knee.

Angle was having trouble getting up, and Triple H applied a version of the Indian Deathlock, but Angle would not give up. Angle then fought back with a series of rights from off his back, and Triple H let him free. Angle stood up and whipped Triple H into the rope, but was then on the receiving end of a facebuster. Triple H then went for the cover, but only got a 2-count. Triple H then lifted Angle and dropped him down on his left knee. Triple H backed Angle into the corner and used the ropes again to drive the weight into his knee joint. Triple H then applied the Figure 4 Leglock and the ref made the count when Angle left his shoulders drop to the mat.

Trish then got in the ring and tried to let Angle free. Stephanie pulled her out and they began slapping eachother on the outside. They fought on top of the broadcast table and Vince came down and tried to pull them apart. The two ladies broke free and started going at it again. Vince finally picked up Trish and started to carry her out. Stephanie ran over and pulled Trish away from Vince and started to choke her. Vince finally pulled Stephanie away and then tried to keep them apart as they tried to fight on the way to the backstage area. Triple H was watching the fight, and was almost pinned.

Angle and Triple H exchange blows in the ring, and Angle then hit a big DDT. He went for the pin, but only got a 2-count. Angle hit an Atomic Drop on Triple H and then executed a belly-to-back suplex and got a two count again. Angle then climbed up to the top rope, but Triple H stopped him with a low blow. Triple H hit a Razor’s Edge from the top and went for 3 covers in a row, but could not keep Angle down.

Triple H went for the Pedigree and Angle broke free. He was pushed into the corner and he fell down, head first, into Triple H’s crotch. Angle then climbed the ropes and hit a moonsault on Triple H. He hurt his knee, but finally made the cover and got a 2-count.

Angle rolled to the outside and Triple H followed him. He jumped off the ring apron and missed Angle, and knocked down Earl Hebner. He rolled Angle into the ring and climbed the ropes. Angle jumped to the middle rope, and arm dragged Triple H to the mat. Angle made the cover, but there was no referee to make the count. Angle then tried to revive Hebner and this allowed Triple H to regain control. Triple H threw Angle into the ring steps, and Hebner was in the way and was knocked out again.

Triple H then went and grabbed the WWF title belt. Angle kicked him in the guy and belly-to-belly suplexed him hard. Angle grabbed the title and tried to his Triple H when he stood up. Triple H kicked him in the guy and hit a Pedigree. The referee was still down and no count was made.

Triple H went out to help the referee, and Steve Austin ran down and attacked him. Austin rolled Triple H into the ring and grabbed the WWF title belt. He hit Triple H squarely in the face with the title and busted him open. Austin started to leave, but came back and hit a Stunner on Triple H and then finally walked out. Angle crawled over and made the pin, but Hebner was still down. Hebner finally got up and made a slow 3-count. Kurt Angle retained his title.
Winner: Kurt Angle

After the match, Triple H stood up and furiously made his way to the lockerroom area. He obviously was on his way to find Steve Austin. They then showed Rikishi and Undertaker getting ready for the big Royal Rumble match.

Kevin Kelley then interviewed The Rock. He said that this was the biggest Royal Rumble in the history of the WWF. He said that everyone wants to know if Kane and the Undertaker are together. He said if they are together, it will be hell for everyone else. He then said they would be together when the Rock was kicking their monkey asses. Rock then said it could come down to anyone in this match, possibly even him and Austin.


Match #5: Royal Rumble Match
Howard Finkel went over the Rumble rules and then the contestants were brought out. Number 1 was Jeff Hardy, and 2 was Bull Buchanon. Bull went right after Jeff, but he seemed to be too fast for him. Bull finally got a hold of him and gorilla pressed him. He almost threw Jeff over the top, but he broke free. Jeff backed Bull into the corner and tried to lift him over, but couldn’t. The counter came up and Matt Hardy came down as #3.
Jeff and Matt went after Bull and quickly threw him over the top rope. They shook hands and fought eachother. Matt tried to lift Jeff over, but was unsuccessful. Jeff his a jawbreaker on Matt and tried to put him over. Jeff countered and pushed Matt onto the ring apron. The counter hit and he helped Matt back in. Faarrooq then came down as #4.

They both went after Faarooq. He tossed Matt over the top, but he held on and stayed on the ring apron. Matt then took Faarooq down, and Jeff hit the Swanton on him. They eliminated Faarooq and then Jeff was nearly thrown over by his brother. Jeff was pissed and they started exchanging blows. The buzzer hit and Drew Carey came down in the #5 spot.

Carey walked slowly to the ring and slapped fans hands on the way down.The Hardyz went at it in the ring and Jeff dropkicked Matt out onto the ring apron. Drew Carey got in the ring and watched the Hardyz go at it. Matt and Jeff were fighting on the ropes and took eachother over, leaving Carey alone. The pyro hit and Kane was the #6 contestant.

Carey was calling for the Hardyz to come back as Kane paced around the ring. Kane got in the ring and threw his arms down and the pyro from the ringposts went off. Carey tried to shake his hand and then offered kane money. Kane grabbed Carey by the throat and Raven came down as #7, saving Carey.

Raven nailed Kane in the back with a piece of wood, and Drew Carey jumped over the top and eliminated himself. Kane and Raven continued to battle, and Raven went for weapons on the outside. While Raven was getting weapons, Al Snow came down and attacked him. The referees stopped Snow and Raven went back after Kane in the ring. The buzzer went off and Al Snow got in the ring in the #8 spot.

Also Snow went for a bowling ball bag from under the ring. Raven was sitting down, and Snow rolled the ball into Raven’s crotch. Kane then went after Snow and then both Raven and Snow started hitting him with trash cans. They his a double drop toe hold on Kane onto a Trash Can. The buzzer hit and Perry Saturn then came down as #9.

Terri was busting out of her top all the way down the aisle. Saturn came into the ring and went after Kane. He got Kane in a leglock. Kane picked up Saturn and military pressed him down to the mat. Raven jumped on his back and tried to get him in a sleeper hold. All three other men finally took Kane down. Steve Blackman the entered the match in the #10 spot.

Blackman went after Kane as soon as he got in the ring. Kane almost eliminated Blackman, but Saturn stopped him. On the other side of the ring, Snow was working on Raven. The buzzer sounded and #11 was Grandmasta Sexay.

Sexay came in and tried to eliminate Snow. He could not get him over the ropes. He then went to work on Blackman, with his own weapon. Kane then grabbed a trashcan and his Sexay with it and he flew over the top. Kane then tried to throw Blackman over, but he held onto the top rope. Kane hit his hands with the can and he fell. Kane then eliminated Raven and Saturn. Honky Tonk Man then came down in the #12 spot.

Honky got on the mic and told Kane to stand back because he had business to take care of. He said that he knew everyone wanted to hear him sing his song. They hit the music and he started dancing and singing his song. Kane took Honky’s guitar and smashed it over his head. He then picked him up and tossed him over the top rope. The buzzer hit and The Rock was #13.

Rock came in and went right after Kane. Rock knocked him down hard with a flying clothesline. Kane stopped the Rock’s momentum by hitting a clothesline of his own. Rock started throwing fists and Kane knocked him down. Goodfather then came down, entering the match at #14.

Goodfather came in and was immediately thrown over the top rope by The Rock. Kane and Rock then went back at it. Kane whipped Rock into the ropes and sidewalk slammed him down. The counter popped up and Tazz entered the match in the #15 spot.

Tazz ran right over the Kane. He was quickly tossed over the ropes and eliminated. Kane then picked Rock up and tried to get him over in the corner. Rock fougth out and then nearly pushed Kane over. They then showed a recap of Tazz and Lawler timed him at only 5 seconds in the match. Bradshaw then entered the match at #16.

Bradshaw went right after Kane and was joined by The Rock. Bradshaw hit the Clothesline from Hell on Rock and then went back to work on Kane. Rock and Bradshaw then went at it, and Kane came over and knocked out Rock. Bradshaw started to stand up, and Kane kicked him right back down. Kane then continued to work on Bradshaw, and Albert then came down in the #17 spot.

Bradshaw and Kane went to work on Albert. Kane then clotheslined them both down. Albert nearly eliminated Bradshaw on one side of the ring, while Kane was almost throw over in the corner by the Rock. Albert then tried to put Rock over the top, but Bradshaw pulled him away. Bradshaw hit Albert with a big foot to the face. Hardcore Holly, at #18, then joined the match.

Kane was almost put over by Albert. At the same time, Holly and Bradshaw were working together to eliminate the Rock. He held onto the bottom rope and was not thrown over. Albert then went to work on Hardcore Holly. On the other side, Rock got Kane over the top, but he fell to the ring apron. K-Kwik then entered the match at #19.

Albert went right to work on K-Kwik. Bradshaw was almost thrown over by Hardcore Holly. The Rock picked up K-Kwik and almost threw him over the top. Bradshaw then went to work on Kane, while Albert was trying to get Rock over the ropes. Val Venis then came down in the #20 spot.

Val Venis came in and met a spinebuster from Kane. Holly on the opposite side of the ring was choking Rock. Bradshaw and K-Kwik were down and out in the middle of the ring. Kane and Bradshaw were going at it yet again, and William Regal came down at #21.

Regal entered the ring and went right at Bradshaw. Kane then bragged Regal and stomped the hell out of him. Venis nearly put Rock over, but Bradshaw stopped him. Holly then went after Rock and had him teetering on the top rope. The buzzer sounded and Test came in at #22.

Test came in and eliminated William Regal. Test then went to work on his former partner, Albert. He then moved on and had Kane backed into the corner. Val Venis kicked Bradshaw and he landed on the ring apron. The buzzer hit and The Big Show’s music hit. He came in at #23.

Big Show came in and eliminated K-Kwik and Test and then hit choke slams on Bradshaw and Val Venis. Show then followed up and choke slammed every man in the ring, with the exception of The Rock. Rock threw Show into the ropes and then clotheslined him over. Crash Holly then came in as #24.

Big Show was pissed. He went to the announce table and was throwing a fit. Rock came out and went after Show. Rock was chokeslammed through the table by Show and laid motionless in the broke pieces of table. Big Show then walked out. In the ring, all the men were working on eliminating Kane. The Undertaker then came down on his motorcycle at #25.

Undertaker came in and eliminated Bradshaw. Kane and Undertaker then both eliminated everyone and stood face to face in the ring. Rock was still in the match legally, but was on the outside. Kane and Taker stared at eachother until the counter popped up and Scotty Too Hotty entered the match as #26.

Kane and Taker backed away from each other and waited for Scotty. Undertaker hit a big boot to the face of Scotty. Taker and Kane then double chokeslammed Scotty down and then tossed him over the top rope together. On the outside, Rock slowly started to get up. The sound of broken glass hit the arena, and Stone Cold Steve Austin came out as #27. Triple H attacked him as he came down.

Triple H fought with Austin in the aisle. In the ring, Rock went after Kane. The brothers went to work on Rock in the ring. Triple H busted Austin’s head wide open as they fought near the entrance. Billy Gunn then came down at #28.

Gunn ran straight to the ring and at the same time, Triple H was pulled away from Austin by WWF officials. Austin’s face was covered in blood. In the ring, Kane and Undertaker were in control of Gunn and The Rock. Taker hit a huge DDT on the Rock in the middle of the ring. Kane was working on Billy Gunn. Haku formerly known as Meng in WCW then came down in the #29 spot.

Haku went right after Kane. Taker then grabbed Haku from behind and then Gunn went after Kane. Rikishi then came down in the #30 spot and grabbed Austin in the aisle on his way down.

Austin entered the ring and went after Billy Gunn. Austin then ran over and eliminated Haku. Austin then went after Kane. Undertaker then hit a big chokeslam on Rikishi. He grabbed the Rock and tossed him over the top, but he held on and landed on the ring apron. Rikishi then superkicked Taker and he went over the top. Rock and Rikishi then went at it, while Kane was hammering away at Steve Austin.

Rikishi went up top and was going to hit a Banzaii on Rock, but he took too long and Rock put him over the top. Billy Gunn was then eliminated by Steve Austin, which left only 3 men in the ring. They stated that Kane had almost been in the match for one hour at that point. Austin and the Rock locked eyes and went at it in the middle of the ring as Kane was down and out. Rock took down Austin and went for the Rock Bottom when he got up. Austin countered and hit the Stunner. He started to stomp away at Rock, but Kane grabbed him from behind and stopped him. Austin hit a Lou Thesz press and then a low blow on Kane. Austin turned around and got the Rock Bottom from the Rock. Kane then went after Rock. Kane was then thrown through the ropes by The Rock.

Austin picked up Rock and almost got him over, but was stopped when he was raked in the eyes. Rock almost had Austin over. Kane came from behind and knocked over Rock. He thought he got them both, but Austin stayed in the ring. It was now down to two men, Austin and Kane. Austin got hit with a chokeslam and he was down. Kane picked him up and Austin kicked him below the belt.

Kane rolled out of the ring, holding his boys, and he grabbed a chair. Austin got up and Kane tried to hit him with the chair. Austin kicked him in the gut and then hit the Stone Cold Stunner. They were both down and Austin pulled himself over and picked up the chair. Kane got up and Austin hit him over the head three times with the chair. Kane was against the ropes and Austin clotheslined him over eliminate him and win the match. Austin will go onto WrestleMania to face the World Wrestling Federation Champion. Following his victory, Austin cracked open several beers in celebration.
