The show kicked off with Diamond Dallas Page coming through the crowd to the ring. He took the mic and said he was letting the Undertaker known that he had arrived. He said he saw Taker on Smackdown and saw that he looked pissed off. He said he should thank him for the PG footage he showed compared to his personal collection he has. DDP said he was coming into the big dog’s house and kicking his ass all over his own yard. He then said that on Raw DDP will be the first WCW contracted wrestler to step foot in Madison Square Garden. He then told Taker that he would be in the front row so he would be easy to find. He said he would be easy to find because he will be the one with a sign. He then held up a sign that read “Make me Famous” and then went to his front row seat.
Match #1: Kurt Angle vs. Christian (Semifinal Round)
Angle came to the ring first looking to repeat this year with a King of the Ring tournament victory. Christian went right at Angle and got him down in the corner. Angle shot right up and powerslammed him down and then went to work on him in the corner. Christian came right out and hit a neckbreaker and went for the cover, but only got a 2-count.
Christian got right up and stood on Angle’s head and then whipped him off the ropes. He went for a sunset flip, but Angle countered and went for the ankle lock. Christian escaped and walked right into a belly-to-belly suplex from Angle. Christian rolled to the outside and Angle followed him out and pounded away at him. Angle pulled Christian to the announcers’ table and slammed his head into it. Christian countered and rolled Angle back into the ring. He went up top and was sent flying back to the outside by Angle. Angle got him back in the ring and hit a gut wrench into a slam and then hit another back suplex and went for a cover.
Angle hit another suplex and got another 2-count. He got up and wrenched the eyes of Christian and then went for yet another suplex. Christian rolled him up into an inside cradle and got a 2. Angle got up and slammed Christian down and then paced around the ring until he got back up. Christian nailed Angle with a spinning heel kick and both men stayed down. Shane McMahon then came down to the ring. Angle turned and yelled at Shane as he went up top for the Moonsault. He missed the move and Christian went for a cover. Christian hit a reverse back breaker and got another 2-count.
Angle got the ankle lock locked in on Christian, but he reached out and got the ropes. Angle then went for an Olympic Slam and missed and Christian hit his finisher and went for the pin. Shane reached in and pulled Christian out of the ring to break the count. Christian looked out toward Shane as he got back in the ring and Kurt Angle was able to get him from behind and hit the Olympic Slam. He pinned Christian and was victorious and will move on to the finals of the tournament.
Winner: Kurt Angle
Austin was in the back talking to Debra. Coachman walked in and asked Austin about tonight and he said he was waiting for Vince to show up. Jonathan reminded him that Vince said he was not going to be there and Austin said Vince was just a kidder sometimes. He then told Austin the rumor that is Jericho or Benoit takes his title, they may take the WWF title over to WCW. Austin was shocked and has no response.
They then showed a recap of the events that have led to a possible DDP/Undertaker confrontation.
Paul Heyman interviewed DDP at ringside and they then cut to footage of him in the back. He was mad and said that he didn’t want people in his personal life. He told Taker to come get some from the guy with the sign.
Match #2: Edge vs. Rhyno (Semifinal Round)
The match got started and Edge had the upper hand in the match. He got Rhyno backed into the corner, but he fired back with knife-edge chops. Edge then knocked Rhyno off the ring apron to the floor and followed him out and went on the attack. He tried to slam him into the security wall, but he countered and slammed Edge.
Edge then grabbed Rhyno and atomic dropped him onto the top of the security wall. They then made there way down the aisle. Rhyno lift Edge up and dropped him down across the railing. Rhyno then pulled Edge by the hair into the railing again and then went into the ring and removed one of the pads from the turnbuckle. Edge got in the ring and Rhyno flung Edge into the exposed turnbuckle.
Rhyno backed Edge into the corner and slammed into him with a hard shoulder. Rhyno hit a suplex and went for the cover but only got a 2-count. Rhyno whipped Edge over and then got him in the full body scissors lock. Rhyno finally let him free and hit a big power slam. Rhyno then hit a splash off the middle rope and got another 2-count. Rhyno then whipped Edge into the corner and got hit hard with a foot to the face.
Edge hit an atomic drop and then a neck breaker and Rhyno was down. Edge went up top and Rhyno tried to stop him. Edge hammered away at Rhyno and hit a sunset flip from the top. Rhyno then whipped Edge into the ropes and hit a huge spinebuster and then set up for the Gore. Edge and Rhyno collided and were down and out. Rhyno rolled over and covered Edge, but got a 2-count.
The strength of Rhyno’s legs helped him escape an inside cradle. Edge then sent Rhyno into that exposed turnbuckle after his Gore attempt. Edge for the pin and will advance to the finals of the tournament.
Winner: Edge
They showed an interview from Heat with Spike Dudley and Molly Holly. Lilian Garcia interviewed them and Spike said that the tough love his brothers showed him was not necessary. Spike challenged Buh Buh and D-Von to a tag team match and said he would find a partner. They went to Spike and asked him if he had a partner. He said he did and his half brothers approached him and talked some shit and made fun of Molly, calling her and Spike a disappointment.
Tazz then interviewed Chris Jericho and asked him about the rumors of him going to WCW. Chris said he was indeed aware of the rumors and he was just going to shut the hell up concerning the entire deal.
Match #3: Tag Team Championship Match
The Dudley Boyz vs. Spike Dudley & Mystery Partner
The Dudleyz came to the ring and awaited the arrival of their half brother and his mystery partner. An explosion erupted and Kane walked out with Spike. They went right to the ring and gained the upperhand on the Dudleyz. Spike and Buh Buh got the match started. Spike whipped Buh Buh into the ropes and was then Gorilla Pressed by Buh Buh and thrown to Kane. Kane threw Spike back on Buh Buh and he went for the pin.
D-Von was tagged in and so was Kane. Kane whipped D-Von off the ropes and hit a clothesline followed by a leg drop and then an attempted pin. Kane tagged in Spike and he whipped D-Von into the ropes and went for a leg lock on him. D-Von got up and pulled Spike down to the mat by his hair. He tagged in Buh Buh and he went to work on Spike in the corner. He beat him down to the mat and then tagged back in D-Von.
D-Von dropped Spike and then hit a leglock and then tagged Buh Buh back in. Spike was nailed with a hard spinebuster and then shot up and went for a sunset flip on Buh Buh, but he just dropped down on Spike’s head. Buh Buh got Spike in a side headlock and Spike broke free. He kicked Buh Buh in the gut and went for a huricanrana, but got caught and nailed with a Power Bomb. D-Von was tagged in and beat Spike in the corner with repeated blows. Spike got a cheap shot in out of pure desperation and made the tag to Kane.
Kane came in and D-Von tagged in Buh Buh. Kane powerslammed Buh Buh and went for a cover, but he got his shoulder up at 2. Kane cleared the ring by sending the Dudleyz to the outside and tagged in Spike. Kane picked up Spike and threw him over the ropes onto his half brothers on the outside. Spike the got Buh Buh in the ring and nearly got a 3-count. He then went for another cover and D-Von broke the count.
The tag champs got Spike out of the ring and double-teamed Kane. D-Von hit the whassup dive from the top on Kane. Spike came in and went for the Acid Drop on D-Von but missed. D-Von caught Spike and Buh Buh ran over and executed the 3D and pinned Spike for the victory. After the match, Kane powerbombed D-Von and then chokeslammed Buh Buh through a table.
Winner(s): The Dudley Boyz
Edge was shown in his locker room getting ready for his next match. Christian came up and tried to talk to him and Edge snapped at him thinking he was going to say he should be in the finals but Shane screwed him. Christian just looked at him and wished him good luck and said he hopes he beats Angle.
Footage of DDP was then shown again and he flipped out and told Undertaker to come out and get a piece of him.
Billy Gunn was at WWF New York and Jim Ross asked him what he thought about the King of the Ring tournament. He said he was the 1999 KOTR champion and was pissed that he was not in the tournament. He said all he cares about is himself and he walked off.
Match #4: Kurt Angle vs. Edge (Final Round)
Kurt Angle got on the mic and said that he was sorry for getting mad at Edge last week. He said he did not want anything to get in the way of their friendship. Kurt said he has another match with Shane and since there is no way Edge will beat him, he wanted him to hand over the tournament championship to him. Edge clocked him in the face and then went to work on him in the corner. Edge hit a flapjack on Angle and then threw blows at him in the corner.
Angle fought back and they had a short exchange of blows in the middle of the ring. Edge whipped Angle into the ropes and he countered and then belly-to-belly suplexed Edge right over the ropes to the outside. Angle went outside and began to stomp away at Edge and then slammed him into the steel ring steps. Angle then picked him up and slammed his head into the railing. Angle rolled him back into the ring and hit another suplex.
Angle picked up Edge by the hair and hit another vertical suplex and nearly got the 3-count. Angle got Edge in a reverse chin lock and Edge eventually worked back up to his feet. Edge threw an elbow, but Angle nailed him with a forearm. Edge then rolled up Angle for a 2-count and then got up and got nailed with a belly-to-belly suplex by Angle.
Angle then locked in another reverse chin lock. The ref lifted the arm of Edge twice and then he got back up. He thew shots to Angle’s gut and then got thrown over the top rope, to the floor by Angle. Angle followed him out and went back to work on him on the outside. Angle picked up Edge and dropped him on the security wall.
Angle then threw Edge back into the ring and went up top. Edge dropkicked the ropes and Angle fell down on the ropes. Edge hit a huricanrana on Angle from the top and almost got the 3-count. Edge and Angle exchanged blows in the middle of the ring and Edge finally got Angle down. Edge back dropped Angle and then ducked a dropkick attempt by Angle. Edge rolled him up, but Angle kicked out.
Angle went for the Olympic Slam and then the ankle lock. Edge nailed Angle and had him in the pin, but Christian came down and distracted the referee. Angle rolled up Edge and almost got the pin. The referee was knocked down and Angle got Edge in the ankle lock. Edge tapped but the ref was not there to make the call. Shane then came in and speared Angle. Edge DDTed Angle and covered him to get the victory and become the 2001 King of the Ring.
Winner: Edge
Tazz then interviewed Chris Benoit in the backstage area. Tazz asked Benoit if there was truth to the rumor that he may take the WWF title to WCW if he was victorious. Benoit asked him what kind of question that was and then smiled and said it was actually a good one. He walked away with a smile on his face and Tazz looked puzzled.
Edge was then interviewed by Jonathan Coachman and he asked him how he liked the sound of “2001 King of the Ring.” Edge smiled and said it reeked of royalty and he loved it. Christian came in and said he was just trying to help Edge when he went out there and Edge said of course. Christian then went to get balloons to celebrate.
Angle was then shown in the back. He was furious and was yelling that Shane would get it and he understood why he helped him win the first match, so that he would have to wrestle another match and get more tired out for their match.
Match #5: Light Heavyweight Title Match
Jeff Hardy vs. X-Pac
the match got started and X-Pac got a quick arm drag takedown on Jeff. X-Pac got Hardy in a side headlock and then wrestled him to the mat and slapped him in the head to rub it in. Jeff whipped X-Pac off the ropes and he fired at him with a shoulder block. They got up and exchanged blows and Jeff then hit a tilt-a-world leg whip. They fought to the outside and then back to the ring. X-Pac hit a big slam and then worked him over while was down.
X-Pac hip blocked Hardy over the ropes to the outside and waited for him to get back into the ring. Jeff got locked in a reverse chin lock but then fought his way out. He whipped X-Pac off the ropes and hit a spinning heel kick and yelled in Jeff’s ear for him to get up. X-Pac backed him into the corner and hit a kick on him in the chest and went for the broncobuster but missed and hit the turnbuckle.
X-Pac charged Jeff and they collided in a strange way. Jeff then got up and hit the top rope and nailed X-Pac with a corkscrew moonsault. Jeff backed X-Pac into the corner and threw blows at his face. X-Pac hit the X-Factor and went for the cover, but Jeff got his foot on the bottom rope to break the count.
Jeff took down X-Pac and went upstairs. He hit the Swanton Bomb on X-Pac and covered him for the 3-count. Jeff Hardy retained his Light Heavyweight Title.
Winner: Jeff Hardy
William Regal was talking to Tajiri in the back. He was telling him how great the tournament was and that we have a new King. Austin came in and asked if he could use the phone. Steve called Vince and told him about the rumor of Jericho or Benoit taking the title to WCW. Vince did not believe him and Regal confirmed it for him. Austin said he needed Vince’s help and to get his ass to the arena. Vince apparently agreed.
More footage of DDP was shown and he flipped out again. He kept saying he was in control and then ran into the ring with a mic. DDP called out Undertaker and told him to come to the ring and get his ass kicked. More footage was shown of DDP in the back from earlier in the evening. Undertaker’s wife Sarah stepped in front of the camera and said it was time for him to become famous. Undertaker’s music hit and the lights went out. Undertaker walked out to the ring slowly. He stopped at the ring and put on his gloves and then entered the ring
Confrontation
Diamond Dallas Page vs. The Undertaker
DDP and Undertaker went right at it in the ring. Page knocked down taker with a low blow and then started talking shit. Taker threw a series of blows and then knocked DDP out of the ring. Sarah then came down to the ring with that camera. She was video taping as Taker beat up Page. Taker had DDP up against the railing and he pounded Page’s face. DDP ran over and grabbed a chair and nailed Taker in the gut and then across the back. Taker got up and tackled DDP across the announce table. Taker rolled DDP back into the ring and stomped away at him in the corner. Taker threw Page out of the ring and held him by the hair in front of Sarah’s camera. Page rolled back in the ring and begged Taker to forgive him, but Taker nailed him with a boot to the face. DDP rolled out of the ring and ran out of the arena through the crowd and Sarah videotaped him as he walked out.
Stone Cold Steve Austin was shown in the parking lot waiting for Vince to get to the arena. Austin told some dork security guy that when Vince showed up to have him come to his dressing room.
They then showed the events that led up to the Street Fight match coming up between Shane McMahon and Kurt Angle.
Match #6: Street Fight Match
Kurt Angle vs. Shane McMahon
Angle came down after Shane and they went right at it in the ring. Angle worked over Shane and threw him to the outside. Shane got back in the ring and Angle was in the referee’s position for Olympic style wrestling. Shane got on top and Angle broke out and slammed Shane down. Angle was busted open at this point.
Angle hit two belly-to-belly suplexes and then hit several stiff forearms to the side of Shane’s head. Angle backed Shane into the corner and then got back into the referee’s position again, but Shane kicked Angle in the side. Shane whipped Angle off the ropes and hit a huge elbow shot. Angle got Shane in a waistlock and Shane used his ring awareness to fling Angle out of the ring.
Angle got outside and chased Shane around the ring. Shane stopped at the announcers’ table and got on top of the security wall. Shane leaped over the table and nailed Angle. Shane reached under the ring and pulled out a Kindo Stick. He reared back and whipped Angle with the stick repeatedly. Angle powered Shane into the ring with his shoulder and then clotheslined him into the crowd.
Shane executed an arm drag takeover on Angel that sent him into the security wall. Shane then got back and speared Angle right into the steel ring steps. Shane rolled Angle back into the ring and covered him for the pin but only got a 2-count. Shane then went back to the outside and got weapons from under the ring.
Shane nailed Angle in the back with a road sign. He then whipped Angle off the ropes and nailed him on his way back with the sign again. Angle reversed Shane’s next move and wrestled him to the mat. He slapped him in the head and Shane turned it around and got Angle in his own submission move, the Ankle lock. Shane then whipped Angle into the turnbuckle and nailed him with a hurricane DDT on his way out of the corner.
Shane locked Angle in the patented Sharpshooter in the middle of the ring. Angle reached out and grabbed a Kindo stick and beat Shane in the back with pure desperation and broke the hold. Angle swung the stick at Shane twice and missed and Shane hit Angle with stiff jabs. He got him down and went for the cover, but only got 2.
Shane nailed Angle with a garbage can. Angle was down and Shane just laid the can on top of Angle’s body. Shane went upstairs and went for the Shooting-Star press, but missed and landed on the trashcan. Angle went for the cover, but Shane kicked out at 2. Angle back dropped Shane to the mat and then flipped him to the outside.
Angle followed him to the outside and he slammed Shane into the railing. They made their ways down the aisle and Angle went for a suplex, but both men went down hard and were hurt. Angle got up and threw fists at Shane’s head. Shane got right up and fired back at him and Angle then slammed Shane’s head into part of the ramp.
Angle belly-to-belly suplexed Shane right into the stage and he came down hard on the small of his back and head. Angle picked him up and hit the move again, but this time shattered him through the King of the Ring glass. Angle picked Shane up and slammed him into another piece of glass. He tried to get him through again and Shane hit the glass and bounced off it. Angle finally got him through another piece of glass face-first.
Angle went for a cover, but the ref would not make the count unless it was in the ring. Both men were bleeding a lot at this point. Angle wheeled an anvil case over to Shane and picked him up. He laid him across the top of it and started to wheel Shane back to the ring.
Angle got him to the ring and rolled him back in under the bottom rope. Angle went for the cover, but Shane somehow kicked out. Angle then got a trashcan lid and attempted to slam it over Shane’s head, but he hit a low blow. Shane then took the lid and nailed Angle in the head. Shane then hit the Angle slam out of pure desperation. He reached over and got one arm on Angle, but he kicked out at 2.
Both men were down but Angle got up and catapulted Shane into he ringpost. Angle went for a piece of wood and bashed it over the back of Shane. Angle used the board as a platform on the top. He hit the Angle Slam off the small platform from the top rope and both men hit the mat so hard. They were both down and out at this point, but Angle got over and pinned Shane to win the match.
Winner: Kurt Angle
Jericho was shown in the back walking from his dressing room for the WWF Championship match. Benoit was then shown warming up for the match. Steve Austin was in the parking lot waiting for Vince and a WWF official came out and told him it was time for his match. Austin told them to send Vince to the ring when he arrived.
They then showed the events leading up the Triple Threat WWF Title match tonight between Austin, Benoit and Jericho.
Match #7: Triple Threat WWF Championship Match
Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho
Jericho and Benoit came right down and put the beating to Austin. They fought him to the outside into the crowd and double-teamed him. They threw him back over the railing and Benoit thew him back into the ring.
Austin grabbed Benoit in the ring and threw knife-edge chops at him in the corner. Jericho and Benoit went for a double clothesline but Austin kicked them and countered the move. Jericho and Benoit then looked at each other square in the face. Austin and Benoit then put the double team on Jericho in the corner.
Jericho was knocked out of the ring and Benoit and Austin squared off in the ring. Austin finally tossed Benoit out of the ring. Austin suplexed Benoit back in the ring and then slammed into him while he was draped on the ropes. Austin slammed Benoit into Jericho and he went back to the floor.
Benoit stunned Stone Cold and went for the cover. The ref was out of position and could not make the cover. Benoit went for another cover and Jericho stopped him from winning the title.
Jericho and Stone Cold then went at it. Austin went for the Boston Crab on Jericho and he escaped and suplexed Austin to the mat. Austin hit a spinebuster on Jericho and went for the cover. Austin kicked away at Jericho while he was down. Austin suplexed Jericho again and then got him in the sleeper hold.
Benoit came in and attempted to hit Austin with a chair, but missed and hit Jericho. Austin reached out and hit Benoit with the stunner and he rolled out of the ring. Austin went for the cover on Jericho, but he kicked out.
Austin hit another suplex on Jericho and then got him in the corner. He lifted him to the top rope and superplexed him twice in a row. Benoit came in and German suplexed Austin four times and held on for a fifth. Austin hit a low blow and broke free and all three men were down.
Benoit got Austin in the Crippler Crossface and Jericho locked in the Walls of Jericho on him at the same time. Austin tapped out but the ref did not know who to award the match to. Jericho and Benoit then began to go at it while Austin was out.
Benoit muscled Jericho into the corner and then took him down for the cover. Austin rolled out of the ring and went for a chair. Benoit hit him with a baseball slide into his chair and knocked him down. Booker T. then came out of the crowd and kicked Austin’s ass on the outside and smashed him through the announce table.
Benoit then grabbed Jericho and German suplexed him repeatedly. Jericho countered and got Benoit in the Walls of Jericho. Austin was out on the outside and in the ring Benoit and Jericho continued to battle for the title. Benoit got Jericho in a waist lock, but he broke free and went upstairs. Jericho knocked him off and threw him off the ropes.
Jericho hit a Lionsault off the middle rope but did not hit it at 100%. Jericho hit knife-edge chops on Benoit and then then collided and flew to the outside. Jericho picked up a piece of the table and bashed Austin with it, who was already out cold. Jericho got Austin back in the ring and rolled him on his back. Jericho hit the moonsault from the top rope and connected. Benoit knocked Jericho down and Benoit hit the diving headbutt from the top rope. Jericho pulled the ref away in the middle of the count.
Benoit back suplexed Jericho off the ropes and they were both down. Austin rolled over and covered the motionless Chris Benoit for the 3-count and retained his WWF Championship.
