Ring of Honor 7/17 Elizabeth, NJ "Reborn: Completion": Low Ki returns

Posted by Bob Magee

Ring of Honor returned to Elizabeth, NJ for and the Rex Plex for "Reborn: Completion" last night before a crowd of over 800.

  • Roderick Strong and Jack Evans (with Alex Shelley and Austin Aries) defeated Izzy and Dixie with Evans hitting a mind-blowing twisting splash on Izzy for the pinfall.

  • In the first of two qualifying matches for the vacated Pure Wrestling Championship, Doug Williams defeated Jay Lethal (now using the name he's booked on for most independents, instead of the Special K "Hydro" gimmick he'd used in ROH), Nigel McGiness, and John Walters via a Chaos Theory suplex on Lethal.

  • The Carnage Crew (Loc and Devito) defeated "The New and Improved Carnage Crew" of Masada and Danny Daniels in a weapons match. The finish saw Loc nail Masada with a swinging neckbreaker off the ring canvas, through a table. The match finished with a sick spot where Loc and Devito put a trash can atop Masada and began beating it with baseball bats. After they beat the garbage can half to death, Devito covered Masada for the pinfall.

  • In the second of the qualifying matches for the vacated Pure Wrestling Championship, Alex Shelley defeated Austin Aries, Matt Stryker, and CM Punk.

The finish saw Punk and Shelley both hit simultaneous rollups (Shelley on Stryker, Punk on Austin Aries), but referee Sean Hansen counted the pin by Shelley on Stryker, allowing him to advance to the Pure Wrestling Title match against Doug Williams later in the show.

  • In a wild Falls Count Anywhere match Dan Maff and BJ Whitmer defeated Colt Cabana and Ace Steel. Both teams immediately brawled out of the ring and into the crowd, through the crowd at ringside seats, and finally got up to a balcony area where the production stuff and hard camera are situated (think the old stage at the ECW Arena, except smaller and much nicer looking) They teased a spot where Maff was to be knocked off the balcony. The finish saw Dan Maff taking one of the spotlights and hitting Steel with it, followed by Maff and Whitmer doing a "Conchairto" Steele and pinning him up in the balcony

  • In the post-intermission match, Jimmy Rave (now part of Prince Nana's "Embassy") defeated Trent Acid via Styles Cash, which got him a lot of heat with the crowd (and nicely sets up a pairing with Rave and Styles whenever Styles returns).

  • Doug Williams defeated Alex Shelley in the wrestling match of the night to win the vacated Pure Wrestling Championship. Anytime someone tells you that wrestling doesn't sell, send them a tape of this match. These two put on a wrestling clinic.

The finish saw Shelley coming off the top rope with a double stomp to the back of Williams’ head, followed by a and then hit a spinning DDT. Williams came back, charged Shelley in the corner and kneed him. WIlliams trapped Shelley in the ropes, and with the 3 rope breaks maximum rule), Williams cinched in a hammerlock, using the top and middle ropes for extra leverage, causing Shelley to submit

  • In the CM Punk-Ricky Steamboat "final confrontation"...with Punk already in the ring, Steamboat was introduced and charged Punk taking bigtime offense on Punk with classic Steamboat chops.

After this beatdown, Steamboat held the ring bell above CM Punk, said that Punk "has all the talent in the world but his attitude is destroying him". Steamboat said that "if Punk continues with his smart ass attitude, Steamboat will continue to beat him.", and finally challenged Punk by saying "Punk has the chance to stand up and be the man [Steamboat] feels he can be, or can continue getting beaten".

Generation Next stormed the ring and jumped Steamboat, as Punk was selling his own beating. Steamboat attempted to fight back, but was beaten down 4-1.

In surprise #1 of the night, Punk got up and said "he was given the choice to be the man that he could be and he was making his choice to be that man", and suddenly did a babyface turn, attacking Generation Next, who gang-rushed him, but Steamboat made the save for Punk, as they chased Generation Next from the ring. The crowd gave both a standing ovation.

Post-angle, Punk and Steamboat eyed each other, then finally touched knuckles. Steamboat left the ring, leaving Punk to a standing ovation from the crowd.

  • In the main event, ROH champion Samoa Joe and The Briscoe Brothers defeated Homicide and The Havana Pitbulls by DQ when Homicide threw a fireball at Samoa Joe and missed him but hit Jay Briscoe (sort of), as the fireball seemed to hang in the air, as Jay had to improvise and sort of swat at the air to make the fireball look like it was near him

The most notable events occurred post-match as Marc Briscoe made the save for his brother, going for Julius Smokes but was beaten down by Homicide. Homicide got on the mike, and said "that there was nobody who could stop them".

Suddenly...the crowd heard very familiar music, and proceeded to go nuts as Low Ki made his return for surprise #2. Low Ki first grabbed the Ring of Honor title belt from Homicide and protected Joe. Homicide said it was his time now, since Low Ki had left RO, and said ROH "wasn't Ki's business anymore". Low Ki said that "after everything he put his heart into, how dare Homicide disrespect the ROH belt". Ki then said that "no one was going to disrespect the belt.....pause.... no one but him" and turned on Samoa Joe attacking him with the ROH belt and all of them laid out Joe.

Ki told the fans that he was better than all of them, and said that since he was gone "ROH had gone downhill, from the shoddy wrestlers in the locker room, and (apparently going into business for himself, as this comment will be edited from the commercial tape/DVD) made reference to the company's former 'boy touching owner.'" Homicide announced Ki as the newest Rottweiler.

Homicide and The Havana Pitbulls held up the ROH banner over the beaten down Samoa Joe, with Low Ki saying, “Take a good look, this is the new Ring of Honor.” They then celebrated, attacked Joe again in the aisle and took the ROH belt with them as they left to end the evening.
